Notes for Olive BUTLER

One of James’s daughters, Olive, was a gay vivacious person, beloved by all. She married Joe Mullins, private secretary to Sir Lionel Phillips and later personal assistant to Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. Joe rose to eminence in the mining world and his
integrity, sound judgement and outstanding qualities of leadership won him the esteem, almost adoration, of a host of friends. He was Chairman of several mining houses and on the Board of many companies. He and Olive retired to Port Alfred but the
change over from intense activity to leisurely retirement was too much for his constitution and within a few years he died. Olive was an indefatigable social worker and philanthropist and her thoughtful kindliness and keen sense of humour brought
sunshine to many a home in distress. Joe’s abilities were on a plane way above do-it-yourself chores and Olive deploring this deficiency in his make-up told a friend that she had to fix everything that went wrong in the house. "Joe is so useless",
she said, "He can’t even hammer in a screw!" She was playing bridge one afternoon at Port Alfred and after telling an hilarious story it came to her turn to play and her friends, still laughing, were shocked to discover she had had a heart attack and
had died sitiing there with a laugh on her lips.
