Notes for Richard GIDDY


Richard Giddy arrived in South Africa on March 30th 1835 on the sailing ship "Maria". He was an ordained Wesleyan minister and his mission stations included Thaba Nchu, Lisuani, Umpukane and Platberg in the Eastern Free State, Colesberg and
Wittebergen in Basutoland (Lesotho). During his 45 years he officiated as minister, teacher, printer and medical doctor. With James Allison he in 1844 undertook a journey to the Baraputse tribe in what is now Mozambique, establishing several mission
stations en route to Delagoa Bay.
